A pioneer in the newspaper distribution business, METRÔ NEWS started circulating in the capital on September 14, 1974, at a historic moment for the city: the beginning of the operation of the first seven kilometers of the subway lines of São Paulo.
While the subway opened the stretch between Jabaquara and Vila Mariana stations, Line 1-Azul, the first issue of the newspaper arrived in the newsstands, sold at fifty cents and 24 pages. The headline of the inaugural publication of the journal, as it could not be, approached the new system of public transport. Entitled "The Subway, the future now", its stories emphasized the work of workers, mostly from the Brazilian Northeast, and the advance of Sao Paulo when opening the first Metro of Brazil. Among the highlights, the operator of the first commercial system train, Edson Tukamoto, who gained notoriety.
During the last decades, as well as the expansion of the kilometers of traffic in the São Paulo Metro, which now serves an average of 4.2 million passengers per day, METRÔ NEWS, based in Guarulhos, gradually increased its circulation. Initially distributed only on Mondays, it was later circulated from Monday to Thursday and, finally, from Monday to Friday. In 2010, another novelty: with a current edition of 150 thousand copies, the periodical started to count on Megatiragem, a special edition in which in a single day 1,000,000 copies are distributed, free of charge, to the population.
